Smiley Tutorial
Ok here i'm going to try and show you how to make a
smiley .
Ok the first thing you are going to need is something to create a smiley
with,
I am using
JASC's Animationshop 3 here to show you how to do it which is what i
use to make mine
but any program that can make an image that allows you to make the
background of the image transparent will do .
This tutorial will show you how i do them, it will be basicly the same
for most the other programs that can be used.
Rigth lets get started then .
1: Open Animationshop or the program you are going to use.
2: Click file & select new.

3: When you select new there will be a small menu/pop up box appear.

This is where you set the basic elements & properties of the smiley that
you are going to make.
Make sure you set the Canvas colour (background) too Transparent & enter
the size you want the canvas too be.
(Here i am going to use 20 X 20 but you can make it bigger depending on
the size of smiley you want too make.)
The usual size of a smiley is between 15 X 15 & 17 X 17,which is the
size usual you will see on Forums.
As we will be cropping the image down before we save it 20 X 20 will be
fine for what we are doing here.
4: Once you have set the desired size & selected Transparent canvas
click OK.
5: Right now Zoom in so you can see clearly what you are doing.
Click the Magnifying glass Icon then left click to make it bigger (right
click will make it smaller)
(if you have a mouse with a scroll wheel that will do the same as
left/right mouse click)

6: Now, Click the Paintbrush Icon then set the paintbrush Size to 1,
this is going to give you a single pixel sized paintbrush which is ideal
for what we are doing.
7: Now you need too chose which colours you are going to use.

To the right hand side of your screen will see a section like this,
this is where you define the colours you will be using.
You can use 2 colours at once, one with the right mouse button
(for the fill showen as yellow) & one with the left (for the edge showen
as black)
Click on the top box and you will see the colour chart shown below.

Choose Black for the Top box colour. (As you will need to make an
outline in black first.)
Then once Black has been chosen, click the bottom of the two boxes &
select another colour
that you want too fill your smiley in with, ( I choose yellow to do this
one with as it's a good contrast.)
8: Now using the black and the brush you make a simple single pixel
outline.

I have made round shape, you can make any shape smiley you like, but try
to make sure it
has symmetry as it will make life easier for you later when adding
thing's such as eyes & a mouth.
9: If you just want a simple smiley you can fill inside the outline with
a single colour,
just chose the paint bucket Icon.

Chose the colour you are going too fill it with (try just using the
yellow for now though).
Click on the bottom box so you can see the colour chart again.
Then click inside the shape you made to fill it with the chosen colour.
You should end up with something that looks like this.

10: This is where you really start to create your Smiley, by adding a
mouth, nose, eyes or whatever.
12: Once you have made your smiley,
you may need too crop down the canvas if you have a lot of space round
it to make it nice & neat.
The reason for doing this is so the overall size of the smiley will not
make it look as if it is floating
if you wanted to use your Smileys on internet forums or in E-Mails.
Right chose the Crop tool as shown in the image below.

Then click at the edge of your smiley inside the image canvas keep the
mouse button held down &
then make a square shape around your smiley leaving a one or two pixel
gap around the smiley.
Now double click inside the square you just made to crop it.

Right now lets save your smiley......
Goto the top left hand side of your screen click on File then on
the drop down menu click Save As

Chose the file you are going to save it in then name the smiley then
press save.
Make sure you save it as a gif image.
Saving it as a gif image will allow you to animate it later if you wish.

The finished image should look somthing like this
